The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of `recipes` far back into ancient history, at least as far into history as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, sadly, these ancient records were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Later, there were some recipe books from the fourteenth century : a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books are nothing to do with the curry that we all know today, but rather accounts of the types of meals on the tables of the upper classes of the time. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods, spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes caused an outbreak in manuscripts on cooking, most of which are now in private cookery archives. The arrival of television gave us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this. |
