The History of Recipes

We are able to trace the history of `recipes` way back into the far past, in truth as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, sadly, these early records were just simple pictorial instructions for meal preparation.

In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts in ancient history is a series of tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel blissful and exhilarated.

During the time of the Romans a man called Apicius compiled a few scripts showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the roman meals were divided into starters, entrees and dessert, something we still use today. He also recounts how the early Romans made use of a good variety of herbs, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example thyme, mint and parsley.

Later on, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including coriander, parsley, and basil. These new spices and herbs was responsible for an outbreak in recipe manuscripts, many of which still exist in academic collections.

When we get to the 20th century, recipe publications are greatly in demand due to increased literacy, people having more leisure time and a general increase in wealth.

The arrival of TV brought us TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books.

And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading.
