The History of Recipes

Written recipes as a concept can be traced way back into history, in truth as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. However, these, ancient cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.

Continuing our culinary historical journey, there were two interesting cookery books dating from the 14th Century - a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these books have no connection with the indian curry that we all know today, but instead descriptions of the types of food on the tables of the upper classes of the period.

Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, such as coriander, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices created an outbreak in recipe books, most of which are kept safe in academic collections.

The TV revolution brings us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes just like those on sites such as the one you are reading now.
