The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of written recipes way back into ancient history, in truth as far into history as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, sadly, these old recipes were just very simple pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to historians is a series of clay tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled some documents which described recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. He recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, main meal and afters, something we still use today. This early Roman chef tells us how the Roman cooks made use of many different spices, including some that we all recognise such as bay, fennel and parsley. During the following few hundred years, the wealthy families of Europe tried to serve up the most extravagent meals, and consequentially the best cooks and their collection of recipes were much in demand. However, it was during the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down popular recipes of the day. The revolution that is television brought us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on this recipe site. |
