The History of Recipes
Food historians have traced the existence of recipes far back into ancient history, at least as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. Having said that, sadly, these early cook books were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there were a couple of interesting books which date from the 14th Century - one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these books are not about the indian curry that we all know today, but instead accounts of the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the rich and powerful of those days. By the arrival of the 20th century, cookery books are in high demand, mostly due to higher levels of literacy, people having more spare time and having more money. |
