The History of Recipes

It is quite possible to follow the history of recipes far back into the far past, at least as far back as early Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these old records were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.

In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts is a series of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `blissful`.

Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius created a number of documents detailing recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. He recounts how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, main course and dessert, something we still use today. This early Roman chef informs us how the early Romans used a good variety of aromatic flavors, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example basil, fennel and dill.

For the centuries that followed, the families of Europe competed to serve up the most extravagent meals, and consequentially cooks and their recipes became highly prized. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collecting, trying out, and recording the recipes of their peers.

By the time we get to the 20th century, cookbooks were in great demand, mostly as a result of better eduction, more free time and disposable income.

The introduction of the TV gave us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as this.
