The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be observed way back into the far past, in fact as far into history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these early recipes were just basic pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts is a series of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel blissful. Much later, in Roman times a man called Apicius created some scripts showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the roman meals were divided into appetizers, main course and desserts, something we still use today. He also informs us how the Roman chefs used a good variety of spices, including a few you will know for example bay, fennel and asafoetida. Later on, we have a couple of interesting cookery books which date from the 14th Century ; one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these are nothing to do with the indian food that is served today, but rather recipes for the types of food prepared by the cooks of the rich and wealthy people of the period. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new spices and herbs from the holy lands, such as rosemary and coriander. These new foods and tastes prompted a surge in recipe manuscripts, the majority of which still exist in private libraries. The introduction of the TV brings us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
