The History of Recipes
We can trace the history of written recipes way back into distant history, at least as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just simple pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to historians are some tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `wonderful`. Closer to modern times, there were two interesting cookery books from the 14th Century ; one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these two books are nothing to do with the indian food that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the rich and powerful of that time. During the next few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe tried to lay on the best banquets, and as a result cooks and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. However, it was during the 1800s that fine cookery and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collating, testing, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. By the time we get to the twentieth century, cookery books were increasing in popularity due to increased literacy, people having more free time and having more money. |
