The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of `recipes` back into ancient history, in truth as far into history as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these early recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to food historians are some ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of scripts which described recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and afters, a very modern way of dining. He also describes how the Roman chefs used a good variety of aromatic flavours, including a few you will know such as thyme, rue and asafoetida. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new foods, spices and herbs from the holy lands, including coriander, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices prompted an eruption in manuscripts on cookery, most of which are now in academic collections. By the time we get to the 1900s, cooking publications were starting to become popular due to better eduction, more leisure time and having more money to spend. The arrival of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes such as those found on our site. |
