The History of Recipes
Food historians have found proof that recipes existed far back into the distant past, in truth as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these ancient recipes were just basic pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to academics are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we find a couple of interesting cookery books which appeared in the fourteenth century - a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these are not about the curry that appears on menues today, but instead accounts of the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich and wealthy people of those days. During the succeeding few hundred years, the families of Europe tried to serve the most extravagent meals, and as a result the best cooks and their recipes were much in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century that haute cuisine and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, trying out, and writing down recipes of the day. By the arrival of the twentieth century, recipe books were in great demand, due to better eduction, leisure time and disposable income. The introduction of television brought us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this. |
