The History of Recipes
Food historians have traced the existence of recipes back into ancient history, in truth as far back into recorded history as pharonic Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, sadly, these early cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius created some documents which described recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his works, he recounts how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and dessert, something we still use today. Aspicius describes how the chefs of Roman times were skilled in the use of many different aromatic flavors, including some familiar names such as thyme, rue and dill. Over the following few hundred years, the rich families of the West tried to serve the most extravagent meals, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their collection of recipes were much in demand. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that haute cuisine and recipe collections rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collating, testing, and recording recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. The introduction of television brings us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
