The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of `recipes` way back into the distant past, certainly as far back into recorded history as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further. Having said that, these, early cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `wonderful`. As we move on, there are a couple of cookery books published in the 1300s ; a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these two books are unconnected to the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of meals served to the rich and wealthy people of the time. During the next few centuries, the powerful families of the West competed to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and because of this cooks and their recipe collections were highly sought after. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collecting, testing, and writing down recipes common in their social group. The revolution that is television brought us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this site. |
