The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be tracked back into the distant past, at least as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these old cookbooks were just very simple pictorial instructions for food preparation.
Continuing our culinary historical journey, there are some recipe books published in the 14th Century ; a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these books have no connection with the curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of food prepared by the chefs of the wealthy. Later on, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many foods and spices from the Middle-East, such as parsley and basil. The introduction of these new herbs and spices created an outbreak in manuscripts on food, many of which still exist in private libraries. The TV revolution brought us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes like those on our site. |
