The History of Recipes
Academics have tracked the existence of recipes back into ancient history, certainly as far into history as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these ancient cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to food historians is a collection of stone tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel exhilarated and blissful. Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius created some scripts describing recipes cooked by the Romans. He recounts how the meals were split into starters, main course and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he informs us how the early Romans made use of a wide range of aromatic flavors, including some that we all recognise such as bay, rue and dill. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we have a couple of interesting recipe books which appeared in the fourteenth century ; a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, they are not about the curry that is served today, but rather recipes for the types of food on the tables of the rich and wealthy people of those days. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many foods and herbs from the holy land, including spices like basil and coriander. The introduction of these new herbs and spices was responsible for an increase in manuscripts on food, the majority of which still exist in private libraries. The introduction of television brings us cooking programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on sites such as this. |
