The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be traced way back into ancient history, certainly as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, mostly, these old cook books were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we have a couple of interesting recipe books which were published in the fourteenth century ; a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these are not about the curry that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of meals on the tables of the upper classes of those days. When we get to the 20th century, recipe books were in high demand, as a result of increased literacy, people having increased free time and having more money to spend. |
