The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be traced far back into the distant past, at least as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Having said that, sadly, these early records were just primitive pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts are a few stone tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of scripts detailing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius describes how the ancient chefs used many spices and herbs, including many that are still in use today like bay, fennel and dill. Over the succeeding few centuries, the upper classes competed to offer the most exotic banquets, and consequentially chefs and their recipes became highly prized. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cookery and recipe collections really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collecting, testing, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. When we get to the 20th century, cookery books are in great demand, mostly due to better eduction, more spare time and disposable income. The TV revolution gave us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
