The History of Recipes
Experts have proved the existence of recipes far back into the far past, in fact as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, sadly, these ancient recipes were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are some clay tablets in Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we find a couple of books which date from the fourteenth century ; a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, they are not about the curry that appears on menues today, but rather recipes for the types of meals eaten by the upper classes of the period. Over the following few hundred years, the powerful and rich strove to serve the most exotic meals, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipe collections increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe publications became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collating, testing, and publishing recipes of the day. By the arrival of the 20th century, cookbooks are starting to become popular mostly due to better eduction, more leisure time and a general increase in wealth. |
