The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be observed back into the distant past, at least as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, these, old records were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered, according to food historians are a few clay tablets in Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel exhilarated and blissful. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there are two recipe books published in the fourteenth century - a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these are unconnected to the indian curry that we all know today, but instead accounts of the types of food on the tables of the rich and wealthy people of that period. Later on, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many foods and spices from the holy lands, including spices like coriander, parsley, and basil. These new culinary innovations prompted a torrent in books on cooking, the majority of which are now in private cookery archives. Over the succeeding few hundred years, the powerful families of Europe competed to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially the best chefs and their recipes were at a premium. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cooking and cookery books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, testing, and recording recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. The TV revolution brought us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
