The History of Recipes
Food historians have found proof that recipes existed back into distant history, at least as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. However, generally, these old recipes were just primitive pictorial instructions for food preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to historians are some clay tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. Closer to modern times, we have a couple of interesting books which appeared in the 1300s : one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, they are not about the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of food prepared by the chefs of the wealthy. During the succeeding few hundred years, the wealthy families of Europe competed with each other to serve up the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, cooks and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The revolution that is television brings us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on this web site. |
