The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of `recipes` way back into history, at least as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, these, old cook books were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts is a series of tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel blissful. Later, there were a couple of interesting books published in the fourteenth century ; a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these books are nothing to do with the curry that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the wealthy. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods and spices from the holy lands, including basil and coriander. The introduction of these new herbs and spices caused a surge in manuscripts on food, many of which are now in private libraries. During the following few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Europe competed with each other to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipe collections became highly prized. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe collections became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, verifying, and recording recipes to help cooks of their time. The arrival of television brings us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
