The History of Recipes

We are able to read the history of written recipes way back into antiquity, at least as far back into history as early Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, mostly, these ancient cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.

The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe found, according to academics are a few clay tablets in Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel blissful.

As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts describing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main course and afters, something we still use today. Aspicius tells us how the Roman cooks were skilled in the use of a wide range of aromatic flavors, including a few you will know for example bay, rue and dill.

During the next few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Europe competed with each other to serve up the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, chefs and their recipes were much in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cooking and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to assembling, trying out, and publishing the recipes of their peers.

The revolution that is television brings us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on sites such as this.
