The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to prove the history of written cooking instructions back into distant history, at least as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. However, sadly, these early cook books were just simple hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a collection of stone tablets in Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel blissful. Closer to modern times, there were some interesting books published in the fourteenth century ; a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these two books are unconnected to the curry that is popular today, but rather recipes for the types of food prepared by the chefs of the rich and wealthy people of the period. During the succeeding few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Europe strove to offer the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipe collections were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to assembling, verifying, and recording recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on our site. |
We hope you enjoy this Chile Rellenos recipe.
