The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be traced way back into distant history, in fact as far as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. Having said that, generally, these ancient recipes were just basic pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there were two books from the 1300s : a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these are nothing to do with the indian food that is popular today, but rather recipes for the types of meals cooked for the rich and wealthy people of the period. Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from the holy lands, including spices such as parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices prompted a surge in recipe manuscripts, many of which still exist in private libraries. The arrival of TV brings us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
