The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to trace the history of written cooking instructions way back into the distant past, at least as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, sadly, these early records were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to academics are some tablets in the Sumerian language describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel `wonderful`. Moving on, there are a couple of interesting books from the fourteenth century ; a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these two books have no connection with the curry that appears on menues today, but instead accounts of the types of food eaten by the rich people of the time. During the following few centuries, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to offer the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipe collections were at a premium. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century that cooking and recipe publications became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, testing, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the advent of the 1900s, recipe books are in great demand, due to more people being able to read, people having increased spare time and having more disposable income. |
