The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be traced back into ancient history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old records were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are a few tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. Closer to modern times, we have a couple of interesting cookery books which were published in the fourteenth century ; a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these two books have no connection with the spicy food that is served today, but rather accounts of the types of food on the menus of the rich and wealthy people of that time. During the succeeding few centuries, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve the most extravagent meals, and consequentially the best chefs and their recipe collections increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe publications became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collecting, trying out, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
