The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of written cooking instructions back into antiquity, at least as far into history as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. However, mostly, these ancient cook books were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts is a collection of stone tablets in Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel blissful. Moving on, there are two recipe books which appeared in the fourteenth century ; a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these are unconnected to the spicy food that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of meals served to the rich and wealthy people of that period. During the following few centuries, the wealthy families of the West competed to offer the most exotic meals, and because of this the best cooks and their recipe collections were highly sought after. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cooking and cookery books became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording recipes common in their social group. By the advent of the 1900s, cooking books were in great demand, mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, more leisure time and disposable income. |
