The History of Recipes
It is possible to read the history of written recipes far back into distant history, in truth as far back as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, these, early recipes were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are some ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel wonderful. Later on, there were some interesting books which appeared in the 1300s - a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these two books are unconnected to the indian curry that is popular today, but rather recipes for the types of food cooked for the upper classes of that period. For the centuries that followed, the rich and powerful families of Europe strove to offer the most extravagent meals, and because of this chefs and their recipes increased in prestige. Even so, it was during the 19th century that cookery and recipe collections really came of age. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. By the time we get to the 20th century, cookery publications are greatly in demand mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, increased leisure time and a general increase in wealth. |
