The History of Recipes
Historians have traced the existence of recipes far back into ancient history, in fact as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these ancient cookbooks were just primitive pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts are a few tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `wonderful`. Moving on, there are a couple of cookery books dating from the fourteenth century ; a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these are not about the spicy food that appears on menues today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals on the menues of the upper classes. During the next few hundred years, the powerful families of the West competed to lay on the most exotic banquets, and consequentially the best chefs and their recipe collections became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century the formal cooking and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, testing, and recording recipes of the day. By the advent of the 1900s, recipe books are highly popular mostly due to better eduction, people having increased leisure time and disposable income. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on this site. |
