The History of Recipes
Academics have found proof that recipes existed back into the distant past, at least as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. However, in the main part, these old recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts is a series of tablets in Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel exhilarated. Closer to modern times, there are two recipe books published in the fourteenth century : a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, they have no connection with the indian curry that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of food eaten by the wealthy. In the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods and spices from middle-east cuisine, including basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices was responsible for an explosion in recipe books, the majority of which are now in private collections. During the succeeding few centuries, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and because of this the best cooks and their collection of recipes became highly prized. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century that cookery and cookery books became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to assembling, testing, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
