The History of Recipes
Food historians have proved the existence of recipes back into the distant past, certainly as far back into recorded history as pharonic Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, generally, these ancient recipes were just basic pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts are a few ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there are a couple of recipe books which were published in the 14th Century - a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these two books are unconnected to the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but rather accounts of the types of meals served to the nobility of that time. Over the next few centuries, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve the most extravagent meals, and because of this the best cooks and their recipes became highly prized. However, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe books became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collating, verifying, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
