The History of Recipes
Experts have tracked the existance of recipes far back into antiquity, certainly as far back as early Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these early cook books were just simple pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to food historians are a few tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel blissful and exhilarated. Progressing into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. He tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into starters, main meal and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius tells us how the cooks of his times used many different herbs and spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as basil, rue and parsley. Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including coriander, parsley, and basil. These new culinary innovations was responsible for an explosion in manuscripts on food, some of which still exist in private cookery archives. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like those on our web site. |
