The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of written recipes far back into the distant past, in truth as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, mostly, these early records were just primitive pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts in ancient history are some tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful. As we move on, we find a couple of interesting cookery books which date from the fourteenth century ; a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these are unconnected to the spicy food that appears on menues today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals on the tables of the nobility of that time. During the next few centuries, the families of Europe tried to serve the most exotic meals, and as a result the best chefs and their recipe collections increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe publications became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to assembling, trying out, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the advent of the 20th century, cookbooks were increasing in popularity mostly due to increased literacy, people having increased spare time and a general increase in wealth. The revolution that is television gave us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Chili Powder Spice recipe.
