The History of Recipes
We can track the history of meal recipes far back into the far past, certainly as far back into history as pharonic Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these early cookbooks were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are a few tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel wonderful. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there were a couple of interesting recipe books dating from the 1300s - one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, they have no connection with the curry that is popular today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals prepared for the nobility of that time. Over the following few hundred years, the upper-class families of the West competed with each other to lay on the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, chefs and their recipes were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe collections became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, spent years to collating, verifying, and recording popular recipes of the day. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
