The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to track the history of transcribed cooking instructions far back into distant history, at least as far as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. Having said that, in the main part, these early cook books were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to academics are a few stone tablets in Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel exhilarated. Progressing into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius created some scripts describing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. This early Roman chef tells us how the cooks of Roman times made use of a wide range of herbs, including a few you will know like bay, rue and dill. During the following few centuries, the powerful and rich competed with each other to serve up the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that formal cookery and cookery books became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
