The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to track the history of recipes way back into history, at least as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, sadly, these old cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history is a series of stone tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel exhilarated. Closer to modern times, there were a couple of interesting books published in the 14th Century : a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these two books are not about the indian curry that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich people of the period. During the succeeding few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Europe competed with each other to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. However, it was during the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe collections became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
