The History of Recipes
Historians have proved the existance of recipes way back into the distant past, in truth as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these ancient cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to academics are a few tablets in Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel wonderful. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there are two interesting cookery books published in the 14th Century - a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these have no connection with the curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich people of those days. During the succeeding few hundred years, the powerful families of the West tried to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and as a result cooks and their recipes were much in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cookery and recipe books really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, trying out, and publishing popular recipes of the day. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this. |
