The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to prove the history of transcribed cooking instructions far back into history, at least as far into history as early Egypt, and possibly even further than that. However, generally, these old cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Later on, we find some recipe books which appeared in the 14th Century : a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these books are unconnected to the curry that is served today, but instead accounts of the types of meals eaten by the rich and powerful. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods and herbs from the holy land, such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices created an eruption in publications on food, the majority of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. For the centuries that followed, the powerful and rich houses competed to offer the most extravagent meals, and consequentially cooks and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century that formal cookery and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and recording recipes of the day. By the time we get to the 20th century, cook books were in great demand, mostly as a result of better eduction, more free time and a general increase in wealth. The introduction of the TV gave us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on our web site. |
