The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be observed back into ancient history, at least as far as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these old cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of clay tablets in the Sumerian language describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel exhilarated. Continuing our culinary historical journey, we have two interesting books from the 1300s ; a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these books have no connection with the spicy food that appears on menues today, but rather recipes for the types of food eaten by the upper classes of the time. Over the succeeding few hundred years, the rich families of the West competed with each other to serve the best banquets, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipe collections increased in prestige. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s the formal cooking and recipe publications became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, verifying, and writing down recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. The TV revolution brings us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
