The History of Recipes

Written recipes as a concept can be observed far back into the distant past, in fact as far as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, generally, these early records were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.

In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts in ancient history are a few stone tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel exhilarated.

Continuing our culinary historical journey, we find two books from the 14th Century : a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these books have no connection with the indian curry that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of food on the menues of the rich and powerful of the period.

Over the succeeding few hundred years, the families of Europe strove to lay on the best banquets, and as a result cooks and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cookery and recipe collections became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collating, testing, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time.

When we get to the twentieth century, cookbooks were starting to become popular due to increased literacy, people having more spare time and a general increase in wealth.
