The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be traced way back into ancient history, at least as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, these, ancient recipes were just primitive pictorial instructions for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe in existence, according to historians are some ancient tablets in the Sumerian language describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we have a couple of interesting books from the 14th Century : one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, they have no connection with the indian food that appears on menues today, but rather accounts of the types of meals eaten by the rich and wealthy people of those days. Over the next few hundred years, the rich families of Europe competed with each other to serve up the best banquets, and as a consequence, cooks and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century that fine cookery and recipe publications rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down recipes of the day. When we get to the 20th century, cooking publications are in great demand, due to more people being able to read, people having more free time and having more money. The arrival of TV brought us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Chinese Banquet recipe.
