The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be observed back into ancient history, in truth as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe even further. However, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of tablets in Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel wonderful. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we have a couple of interesting cookery books dating from the 1300s ; a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these are unconnected to the spicy food that is popular today, but instead accounts of the types of food enjoyed by the rich people of those days. Over the following few centuries, the rich families of the West tried to serve up the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, chefs and their recipe collections increased in prestige. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, spent years to assembling, trying out, and writing down recipes of the day. The arrival of TV brings us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Chinese Banquet recipe.
