The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be observed back into the distant past, in truth as far back as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, these, old cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts is a series of ancient tablets in Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there are two interesting recipe books which appeared in the fourteenth century : a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these books have no connection with the indian food that is served today, but rather accounts of the types of food on the menus of the rich people of that period. Over the following few centuries, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe tried to offer the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their collection of recipes became highly prized. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that haute cuisine and cookery books became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, testing, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. When we get to the 1900s, recipe publications were starting to become popular mostly as a result of more people being able to read, more leisure time and disposable income. The arrival of TV brought us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on this recipe site. |
