The History of Recipes

Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be traced way back into the distant past, certainly as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, mostly, these early recipes were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.

In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to food historians is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel wonderful and blissful.

Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there are a couple of recipe books which date from the 14th Century ; a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, they are unconnected to the indian food that is popular today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the nobility of the period.

Over the next few hundred years, the powerful families of the West competed to serve the most exotic meals, and because of this cooks and their recipe collections could command a high salary. However, it was during the nineteenth century that haute cuisine and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy.

The arrival of TV brought us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them.

And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on our site.
