The History of Recipes
We are able to follow the history of meal recipes way back into ancient history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these early recipes were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of stone tablets in Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel wonderful. As we move on, we have a couple of recipe books from the 1300s : a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these are nothing to do with the curry that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the rich and wealthy people of that time. During the following few hundred years, the rich families of Europe competed to serve the best banquets, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe collections became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording recipes to help cooks of their time. The arrival of television brought us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
