The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as a concept can be tracked back into antiquity, at least as far as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. However, mostly, these old cook books were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there are two interesting books which date from the 1300s - a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these are unconnected to the indian food that appears on menues today, but rather descriptions of the types of food prepared by the cooks of the rich people of those days. When we get to the 20th century, recipe publications were in high demand, mostly due to increased literacy, increased leisure time and having more disposable income. |
