The History of Recipes
Experts have traced the existence of recipes back into the distant past, certainly as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, sadly, these old records were just simple pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe found, according to academics are a few tablets in Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `blissful`. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there are two interesting books which date from the 1300s - a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these two books have no connection with the curry that is served today, but rather recipes for the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the rich. Over the following few hundred years, the powerful families of Europe competed with each other to serve the most exotic banquets, and as a result chefs and their recipes were at a premium. However, it was during the 19th century that fine cookery and cookery books became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, spent years to collecting, trying out, and publishing recipes common in their social group. By the arrival of the 20th century, recipe publications were in high demand, mostly due to increased literacy, more spare time and having more disposable income. The introduction of television brought us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
