The History of Recipes
Experts have proved the existence of recipes way back into history, in fact as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, sadly, these old cookbooks were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts is a series of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel exhilarated and blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there were a couple of books which appeared in the fourteenth century - a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these books are not about the indian food that is popular today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals served to the rich and powerful. Over the following few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Europe strove to serve the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipes became highly prized. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that haute cuisine and recipe collections became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to assembling, trying out, and recording recipes to help cooks of their time. By the arrival of the 20th century, cookery publications are starting to become popular mostly as a result of more people being able to read, people having increased spare time and disposable income. The introduction of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as this. |
