The History of Recipes
Academics have tracked the existance of recipes back into history, at least as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe further still. However, mostly, these old cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a series of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `blissful`. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there are a couple of interesting books published in the 14th Century : one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these two books are unconnected to the spicy food that we all know today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals served to the nobility of the time. During the succeeding few hundred years, the wealthy families of the West competed with each other to offer the most extravagent banquests, and because of this the best cooks and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century that cooking and recipe books became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, trying out, and publishing recipes of the day. By the arrival of the 1900s, cooking books were in great demand, as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having more leisure time and being a little richer. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as this. |
