The History of Recipes
We can trace the history of `recipes` way back into antiquity, certainly as far back as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these ancient recipes were just very basic pictorial instructions for preparing food.
Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a few documents describing recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his works, Apicius describes how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also recounts how the early Romans made use of a good variety of aromatic flavours, including many that are still in use today for example bay, mint and dill. For the centuries that followed, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially cooks and their recipes were greatly in demand. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that haute cuisine and cookery books became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and recording recipes of the day. The introduction of the TV brings us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on our site. |
