The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to prove the history of transcribed cooking instructions far back into history, at least as far back into recorded history as pharonic Egypt, and maybe further still. Having said that, mostly, these old records were just very simple pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a few documents which described recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his works, he tells us how the roman meals were separated into starters, main course and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius tells us how the ancient Romans made use of a wide range of spices and herbs, including some familiar names for example bay, mint and dill. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and spices from Arab cuisine, including coriander, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices was responsible for a torrent in manuscripts on cookery, many of which are now in academic collections. The revolution that is television brings us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this site. |
