The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be tracked way back into the distant past, in fact as far as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. However, mostly, these ancient records were just basic pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to historians is a collection of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. Later on, there were some books which appeared in the fourteenth century : one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, they are nothing to do with the curry that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of food on the menus of the rich and powerful. For the next few years, the rich and powerful families of Europe strove to serve up the most extravagent meals, and consequentially the best chefs and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that cooking and recipe books rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to assembling, testing, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the advent of the twentieth century, cookery publications are greatly in demand mostly as a result of better eduction, people having increased spare time and having more money. The introduction of the TV brings us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes like those on this site. |
