The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to track the history of recipes far back into antiquity, certainly as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these ancient cook books were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe found, according to food historians is a series of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `blissful`. Moving on, we find a couple of recipe books published in the 1300s - a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these books are nothing to do with the curry that is served today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals prepared for the rich people of the period. Over the succeeding few centuries, the upper-class families of the West competed with each other to serve the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipe collections were much in demand. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cooking and cookery books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, spent years to collecting, testing, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The TV revolution brings us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
