The History of Recipes
We are able to read the history of written recipes far back into antiquity, at least as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, generally, these ancient recipes were just basic pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote some scripts detailing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his works, he recounts how the roman meals were split into starters, main course and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius recounts how the cooks of his times made use of a wide range of herbs and spices, including a few you will know for example thyme, fennel and parsley. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods and spices from the Middle-East, including spices such as basil and coriander. The introduction of these new culinary ideas led to an increase in publications on food, some of which are now in private libraries. The revolution that is television gave us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on our site. |
