The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of written recipes back into distant history, in truth as far as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. However, in the main part, these early cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to academics is a collection of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Later on, there were a couple of books which date from the 1300s : a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, they have no connection with the spicy food that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich and wealthy people of the period. For the next few years, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe strove to lay on the most exotic meals, and because of this chefs and their collection of recipes were at a premium. However, it was during the 1800s that cooking and recipe books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, testing, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the advent of the twentieth century, cookery books were starting to become popular mostly due to higher levels of literacy, increased leisure time and having more disposable income. |
